Continued Adult Study On
The Repudiation of the Doctrine of Discovery

As a continuation of our adult learning opportunities on racism, we will have one additional class on Sunday, March 31 at 11:30am to delve deeper into the church’s role in the conquering of indigenous peoples by European explorers and the taking of their lands.  The Doctrine of Discovery is still operative today in U.S. and international law. It continues to have serious impact on the daily lives of contemporary Native American communities and dovetails with our current discussions on racism.

We will become more familiar with the church and state doctrines dating back to the Crusades and carrying through into the legal foundations of our country.  We will gain some understanding of the longstanding implications and consequences for indigenous peoples around the world and more particularly, in our country and state.

The Wisconsin Conference of the UCC has called for all churches in our state to consider study of these issues prior to the Conference Annual Meeting this year, at which time the delegates will consider a resolution on the Repudiation of the Doctrine of Discovery by the Wisconsin Conference.  Let’s utilize scripture and educational resources to guide us through a basic understanding of these historical documents and how our faith calls us to respond.
