Every year we begin the fall season of the church with a Rally Day!  That means every year we get to write an article trying to make a well-worn concept seem exciting.  For assistance I turned to the good, old dictionary.

The word rally as a verb has a couple of meanings.  With reference to troops, it means to come together again in order to continue fighting after a defeat or dispersion or to regroup, reassemble, re-form, or reunite.   It can also mean to recover or cause to recover in health, spirits, or poise. As a noun a rally is a mass meeting of people making a political protest or showing support for a cause or a meeting, gathering or assembly.

It can also mean a competition for motor vehicles in which they are driven a long distance over public roads or rough terrain, typically in stages and through checkpoints.

In a sense we are trying to do all that and then some.  Although we have not experienced defeat in battle we do face challenges as a church that can feel overwhelming at times.  As a faith family we have experienced loss this summer that might cause us to need a little encouragement.  And faith is always an ebb and flow of great hope and joy, mixed with sometimes doubt and questions.  So we rally the troops!  We invite you to reassemble not only to do the work of the church (its vital mission and message) but to come together for mutual support, love and encouragement.

Let’s face it; we have been busy during the summer.  We have had vacations, time off, and an extra focus on enjoying our families and the warm weather.  It may be time to recover our spirits for back to school and work and other commitments that are not as fun as summertime pursuits.  It’s time to rally for what a new academic year has in store.

As a verb, we too gather around a common mission and purpose.  Over the summer our new Co-Moderators, Barb Wood and Shawn Wurtzbacher, and Co-Vice Moderators, Brian and Maura Packham, and I have worked hard to develop leadership and focus around the theme of building on our wonderful gifts and tradition for a vital future.  You will hear more about this idea as we move into the fall.  An excellent leadership retreat in August built on that idea and we are ready to go!

So let’s Rally on September 9 in every sense of the word!  Bring your best gifts, your energy, and your love for this church and let’s come together to see what God has in store for us!

Sunday worship at 10am will feature the kick off of our Children’s Church as well as a fun opportunity to learn about (and practice) our new safety and security plan.

See you Rally Sunday, September 9 at 10am!

Blessings,

Rev. Laura
